I wrote “Software in a Cardigan” because I kept thinking about how quickly people dismiss AI music without understanding the human creativity behind it. If a person writes the lyrics, develops the idea, shapes the theme, chooses the emotional direction, revises the song, and guides the sound, then AI is not replacing the human. It is functioning more like an instrument. This song came from that question: what makes a song alive? Is it the tool that carries the sound, or is it the meaning, intention, and imagination behind it?
The song uses humor because the conversation around AI can get so serious and defensive. I imagined software sitting in a cardigan, drinking tea, feeling misunderstood, and trying to explain, “I’m not the author. I’m the instrument.” That image made the whole idea softer, funnier, and easier to hear. Underneath the playfulness, the song is really about how every new creative tool has been questioned at first, from scribes to the printing press, typewriters, computers, voice-to-text, and now AI-rendered music.
For me, this song is not about machines having a soul. It is about human meaning finding another way to travel. The human writes the meaning. The machine carries the sound. Somewhere in the middle, a new song is found.
